Landmark Benefits
In order to receive Landmark benefits, owners must follow the standards
developed by the Department of Interior to preserve and protect the
historic integrity of buildings, structures, and landscapes. Landmark
communities need to consult with highly qualified professionals.
• Landmark status consistently has improved property values because
of its importance and rarity in the real estate market. However, preservation standards must be followed in order to maintain the property's high historic integrity.
• Landmark properties' values are further improved because of the
Department of Interior's legal commitment to assist Landmark
sites in maintaining their historic integrity. This agency conducts periodic
monitoring of each site and offer technical assistance to owners
of Landmark properties.
• Landmark properties have top funding priority in a Presidential
declared disaster.
• Landmark properties have a strong advantage in gaining competitive
grants, loans, and financial incentives.
• Landmark properties attract influential partnerships which can benefit
the site and thus improve its property value.
• Landmark properties are eligible to place their site plans in a
special federal archive.
• Landmark properties are protected by federal law against any adverse
effects which can be caused by federally funded projects.
• At the Village Green, the community
automatically became eligible for the Mills Act (a property-tax reduction
program) which would attract funding for the association and eligible
homeowners.
• Most important, owners of National Historic Landmarks have the opportunity
to serve as stewards of the nation's most important historic and
cultural assets. This participation will benefit current and future
generations, both on the national and international levels.
